The one machine that fits this climate's two seasons
Humid summers, mild winters, a few hard freezes. A heat pump is built for exactly that pattern, and Cook's installs Lennox heat pumps in all ten markets.

The climate makes the case
From Crescent Beach to the pine flats west of Live Oak, the weather pattern is the same: eight or nine months of removing heat and moisture, two or three of adding a little heat on cool mornings, and a scattering of real freezes. No other equipment matches that pattern as neatly as a heat pump, which is a refrigeration circuit that runs in either direction.
Who it suits
Nearly every home in the ten markets Cook’s serves. Boom-era stucco in St. Johns and Flagler, block ranches in Putnam and Marion, manufactured homes in Columbia and Suwannee: all heat so little that a heat pump is the better machine. The exceptions are homes with natural gas the owner wants to keep (see furnaces and dual fuel) and rooms without ducts, where a mini-split heat pump does the same job at room scale.
Businesses fit too: most rooftop package units on the territory’s plazas and offices are heat pumps.
How it works, briefly
In summer the heat pump is an air conditioner: refrigerant absorbs heat at the indoor coil and releases it outdoors. In winter a reversing valve swaps the roles, and the outdoor coil absorbs heat from air that is, in north Florida, rarely below 40 degrees. The indoor coil releases it into the house. When the outdoor air is too cold to supply enough heat, electric strips in the air handler top it up. Modulating compressors do all of this in longer, gentler cycles, which matters most for humidity.
Sizing for local homes
Cook’s sizes heat pumps by a room-by-room load calculation, never by the old unit’s tonnage. In this territory the mistake is oversizing: a system that cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has dehumidified leaves a 75-degree house that feels like a cave. The calculation also checks the ductwork and sets the auxiliary strip size so winter mornings are covered without turning the house into a resistance heater.
Efficiency tiers and incentives
Lennox heat pumps come in single-stage, two-stage and variable-speed lines, rated under the SEER2 and HSPF2 standards. Higher tiers cost more and do more: better humidity control, quieter operation, lower bills. Which tier pays off depends on how long you’ll own the house and what your utility charges; Cook’s walks through that honestly rather than quoting a savings number. ENERGY STAR models may qualify for utility programs that change year to year; the federal tax credit is no longer among them, having ended after December 31, 2025.
Cook’s installs with charge set by weight, a heat-pump-configured thermostat, the warranty registered in your name, and a labor warranty whose term you should ask for in writing. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] Model numbers and prices appear on your quote.
Heat pump buying questions
Will a heat pump keep up on a 25-degree morning in Lake City?
A properly sized one, yes, with the electric auxiliary strips assisting on the coldest hour or two. Those mornings are rare enough that the strips’ cost is small; the heat pump carries the rest of the winter alone.
Why do you install heat pumps on stands near the coast?
Flood and corrosion. Elevating the unit keeps it above standing water in a storm and out of the splash zone, and lets air move under it. On the barrier islands and along the Intracoastal it’s standard practice for Cook’s.
How is a heat pump sized differently from an air conditioner?
The calculation looks at both seasons, but in this territory cooling drives the size. The heating check is to confirm the unit, with its strips, covers the design cold day without being oversized for the 250 days of cooling.
Does a variable-speed Lennox heat pump need a special thermostat?
To get its full capability, yes: a Lennox communicating thermostat lets it modulate and manage humidity. It will run on a conventional heat-pump thermostat at reduced function. Cook’s includes the right control in the quote.
